This historic home sits on a wide, level lot in San Mateo Park. Due to its landmark status, all additions were placed at the rear or integrated under the existing roofline to preserve the view from the street. A new single-story volume at the back of the house introduced a spacious great room, creating a direct and functional connection to the yard. Above, a series of gabled dormers added living space on the second and third floors, all set discreetly behind the original roofline. The rear yard was reimagined to include a lawn, a central swimming pool, and a pool house. While the main house sits above grade, the pool house is built at yard level, connecting it with the pool and garden. Large folding doors open the structure to the outdoors, making it equally useful as a guest house or an extension of the entertaining space. The project updates the home for contemporary living while maintaining its historic presence.
