This project involved the complete remodel of an apartment in an iconic Pacific Heights building. Dramatic views of the Alta Plaza Park and the San Francisco Bay surround this third-floor space. The building’s historic construction and the limited extent of previous improvements proved to be the most significant constraints of the project. Specifically, this involved preserving the building’s exterior and maintaining existing points of connection to utilities and vertical circulation.

Working with an experienced team, we were able to successfully reconfigure the residence, updating the public and private living spaces. The north end of the unit was opened to better connect the kitchen to the family and living rooms, introducing counter seating at the kitchen and a secondary wet bar connection to the living room. A new central hallway improved circulation to the private areas of the unit. Each bedroom was reconfigured to have an attached bathroom, and each bathroom updated with modern amenities. A powder room was added along the central hallway. A laundry room and pantry were also added adjacent to the existing service elevator. All these interior improvements were designed with no modifications to the existing window openings or vertical circulation of the building. Utilities were reconfigured to respect the existing infrastructure and the units above or below the client’s residence. The success of this project is due to the tediously coordinated team effort between client, contractor, designer, and architect.
